Velvet Revolver - Libertad

Artist: Velvet Revolver
Album: Libertad
Genre: Hard Rock
Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/velvetrevolver

The new Velvet Revolver album is different from their first album, but in a good way.
Contraband was 'in-your-face' heavy, but Libertad is more diverse. It's chock-full of heavy rocking tracks, but has it's fair share of power ballads. As always, Slash gets a solo in every song and shows his mastery of the Wah-Wah pedal, while Scott Weiland is in top form on vocals. Notable heavy tracks include Let It Roll, She Mine, and Just Sixteen. Notable ballads include The Last Fight and my favorite, Gravedancer.

Tracklist:
1. Let It Roll (2:32)
2. She Mine (3:24)
3. Get Out The Door (3:14)
4. She Builds Quick Machines (4:03)

Iron Maiden

Big thanks to Mad Flows for uploading this one.

Courtesy of some other blog whose name I can't remember and doesn't really matter as it's currently out of commission. This rather recent Maiden bootleg features the new Maiden album played live in its entirity. The show is finished up with some other Maiden classics. The performance is excellent and as far as bootlegs go the sound quality is quite good, though the crowd is still a little overpowering at times and sometimes Bruce is a little buried in the mix. I wouldn't be surprised to see this set list re-appearing on Maiden's next live album.

I saw Iron Maiden play this same set in Dublin last December, and it was stunning. Enjoy.

Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger

Artist: Soundgarden
Album: Badmotorfinger
Genre: Grunge, Alternative Rock
Unofficial Soundgarden Page: http://web.stargate.net/soundgarden/

Soundgarden's
Badmotorfinger is by far my favorite grunge album. The tracks are all heavy and mellow at the same time. The guitars are heavy at some points, calm at another section. All the while, Chris Cornell's ever-distinctive vocals wail over the background music. There is no specific notable track on this album, because of them are pure bliss. This is the definitive album of Soundgarden's catalog.

Pearl Jam

Jeremy spoke in class today

Since this week is Grunge week, I'm posting my favourite album to emerge from Seattle's grunge scene.

Pearl Jam managed to fit into a corner of the Grunge scene that appealed more to the mainstream rock listener, they weren't raw and punk-influenced as Nirvana and aren't as metal-influence as Alice In Chains, they tended more towards a classic rock sound. Ten was never as popular as Nevermind or Dirt, but it still influences alternative rock bands today.

The Original Slowhand & the Evil Minions

Artist: The Original Slowhand & the Evil Minions
Album: Bring Back The Funk. Please.
Genre: Funk, Blues, Soul

The Original Slowhand & the Evil Minions is a funk/blues band formed by Kiuas vocalist Ilja Jalkanen. It's rather odd, I think, that a power metal vocalist created an amazing funk album. The sound is an odd form of funk. Ilja plays guitars on the album in addition to playing the kazoo. The bass is funky but not slapped. Notable tracks include
Why I Rule, You're Still Breathin', and Have You Ever Hated Yourself. This is an unexpectedly amazing album from a great power metal vocalist.

Pain Of Salvation - BE

Artist: Pain of Salvation
Album: BE
Genre: Progressive Metal
Band Website: http://www.painofsalvation.com/

BE by Pain of Salvation is Daniel Gildenlow's brain child. This album, like all PoS albums, is a concept, but it contemplates the existence of God and mankind's place in the universe. The track Vocari Dei was created by having people call "God's answering machine" and leave messages to God himself. The album is highly orchestrated, but it still maintains their progressive style. Gildenlow's vocals range between haunting lows and high, wailing cries. The album is surely one of the best they've released, and while it may take a few listens to get the message, the album is extremely profound. Sit back, clear your mind, and prepare to be blown away.

Probot

Ice Cold Man watches earth die, Eternal winter takes its reign, Devoid of light and filled with pain.

As I mentioned in Stormcast #2, Probot was a metal side project of Dave Grohl, famously the ex-drummer of Nirvana and frontman of the Foo Fighter. On the album, Grohl fulfilled his dream of teaming up with vocalists from 1980s and 1990s metal bands who influenced his musical tastes while he was growing up.

Each track has a different vocalist, with such notable legends as King Diamond of Mercyful Fate, Tom G. Warrior of Celtic Frost, Lee Dorian of Cathedral and Napalm Death, and the immortal Lemmy of Motörhead. And who can forget the hidden track, with the man himself - Jack Black.

This is a remarkable album crammed full of awesome tracks, with styles ranging from speed metal to doom metal. Highlights include Centuries Of Sin, Shake Your Blood, Big Sky, and Ice Cold Man.

Artist: Witchcraft
Album: Firewood
Genre: Doom Metal
MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/witchcraftswe

Witchcraft was formed in 2000. These Swedish rockers play a Sabbath or Pentagram style of Traditional Doom Metal - good catchy riffs without the keyboard wankage, certain to interest fans of Spirit Caravan or The Sword. The band was originally formed to record a tribute to Pentagram, but was discovered by Rise Above Records and signed. They have played with such bands as Orange Goblin, and will be playing with The Sword and Clutch later this year. The group's third album is planned for release on Easter 2007. For pure, unadulterated doom, they don't come much heavier than England's Electric Wizard. The band rarely approaches even a midpaced tune -- they're slow, they're heavy, and they're cool. The self-titled debut sticks pretty closely to the classic doom format, while the later material is slightly more stoner/spacey in nature (though in general the style of the band is pretty consistent). Though occasionally on the monotonous side (Supercoven, for example), the sheer heaviness of it all makes these guys essential for extreme doom fans.

Dio

It's always worse at night, When darkness kills the light, We're in the danger zone

Disappointing. This Stormblog has been up for a few months now, and no-one has posted any Dio. The shame of it. Time to right that serious wrong. Ronnie James Dio has rocked for a long, long time. He has songs of wildebeest and angels, he has soared on the wings of a demon.

The Last In Line was released in 1984, and I consider to be equal to the more popular Holy Diver. It's banged full of juicy tunes, with the highlights being all of them.

Fact - You're not allowed to call yourself a fan of heavy metal if you don't like Dio.

Album: s/t and non-album tracks
Genre: gothic, electronic, dark wave
Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/johnnyhollowmusic
Website: http://www.johnnyhollow.com/

From the dark depths of the soul I bring you Johnny Hollow. This band is nothing short of amazing. It mixes electronic ambiance with gothic and darkwave melody. Kitty Thompson plays the cello, and uses it in conjunction with several effects pedals. Janine White displays her beautiful yet haunting vocals over Vincent Marcone's electronic handiwork. The group produces a unique sound which is "sometimes uplifting and, at other times, deeply oppressive"(Urptsukidojis Pad webzine). This band is perfect for deep thought, creative inspiration, or even when you just feel the need for ambiance. If you like the group's sound, you should check out their website: designed by Marcone himself, it's every bit as breathtaking as the music.

Tracklist:

1. Bag of Snow 1. I'll Have You (Dk Thing Rmx)
2. Halfway to God 2. Motherless Child (Abandoned Remix)

Arcana are a very lovely darkwave band. Their music is similar to that of a Siren's song. It is sweet and soothing, yet it sucks you in and commands you. A slight departure from their second album (which in itself was a massive departure from their debut) December Wolves' third release, Blasterpiece Theatre, is a cold release very far from the black metal roots. Featuring an immense amount of sampling and a machine in the drums spot, it feels like an inhuman release (odd since their previous album was entitled "Completely Dehumanized) Numbers such as Desperately Seeking Satan, Solid Gold Beatings, and To Kill... Again (a remake of a song of theirs from Completely Dehumanized) never cease to spit riff after riff of sheer fury. One of my favorite extreme metal albums.

Heavy metal fire, my deep desire

Artist: Nuclear Rabbit
Album: Vicuna
Genre: Funk
MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/nuclearrabbitofficial

Nuclear Rabbit is one of the strangest bands I've ever listened to. They combine funk and metal into one crazy-ass mix, much in the vein of Primus, to which they get compared to often. Bassist Jean Baudin is insane on his bass, using slap and tap techniques to great effect on his 11-string basses and is, in essence, the leader of the band. Greg Parrish's vocals are so weird, but they fit into the crazy music they perform so well that it seems impossible to imagine anyone else putting out those screeches, whoops, growls and other strange noises. Vicuna is their first CD, and is a real treat to anyone. Notable tracks include Secretly Meaty, Supermarket, and A Little Squirrel and His Crack Pipe.

Ogre are a Doom metal band that take their sound from both Traditional Doom and 70's Heavy Rock such as Deep Purple and Black Sabbath. They're almost kind of Stonery in the way they've set up their guitar tone. Anyway, these guys are amazing. They weave tales of war and history going back to Vietnam. Their music is very bass/groove driven like most doom bands. The vocals also come from the bassist, who wails into his mic VERY similar to Deep Purple. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds

And I kissed her goodbye, I said, "All beauty must die"
And lent down and planted a rose between her teeth

I'm sure I don't have to introduce Nick Cave, Australian singer/song-writer and influential figure of the post-punk and gothic rock scenes. He became famous with his band The Birthday Party, after which he formed Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. He is currently working with Grinderman, a garage rock band consisting of four members of The Bad Seeds.

Murder Ballads is a 1996 release by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. The album consists of several songs about the details and consequences of murders. Murder Ballads was The Bad Seeds most commercially successful release, with the song Where The Wild Roses Grow gaining frequent MTV airplay.

Guest musicians present on this album include PJ Harvey, Shane MacGowan and (in a surprisingly good turn) Kylie Minogue.

This album is proper good, and beautiful at times. Be sure to give it a listen.
